Henna-style floral paisley line drawing

Botanical · Colour · Flash

The drawing shows a large central rosette surrounded by layered paisley shapes, leaves, scrolls and small dotted flowers, arranged in a vertical composition. It is built from fine, evenly weighted outlines with dense hatching and dot detailing inside the petals and leaves. The design is rendered in a single dark red-brown ink on a cream background.

Dear Tom,

The lamp man came round again this morning and said the new seam at Hollin Pit runs wet past the second bend, so they have put the lads on the old workings instead. I have not told Mam. She sits by the range with her hands in her lap and counts the pennies twice a day, and I think she would rather not know which way the wind is blowing.

I have been drawing in the margins of the ledger again, the way you used to say I did in school when I should have been doing sums. Yesterday it was a rosette, the sort Mrs Ashby's mother used to paint on the tin trays she sold at the Saturday market. I started at the centre with a single dot and let the petals spread out in rings, then gave each ring a little comb of hatching so the lamplight would catch it. By the bottom I had a paisley curl running down the page like a stalk, with small dotted flowers tucked into every corner where the ink wanted to pool.

Come home with the wages in your coat and I will show you the whole sheet. I have left the rosette at the centre empty, so you can sign your name in it when you are back above ground. Keep your head down by the props and mind the roof.

Your loving sister, Nell
