Black ink script tattoo with flourishes
Lettering · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of stylised, looping letterforms in solid black ink sits across the centre of the frame, with a single diagonal accent mark above. The linework is bold and even with smooth curves and tapered ends, and there is no shading or fill. The image is black and white, with the skin texture and pores visible around the tattoo against a plain background.

The rubbing had taken Maud three days to make, and still the last word would not give. She knelt on the wet flags of Carrow Keep with the paper pinned beneath her knee, working charcoal across the lintel the way her father had taught her, while rain ran off the broken parapet and dripped past her collar. The letters looped back on themselves like rope left out to dry. Each one ended in a tail, and above the third sat a single slanting stroke that the surveyor had dismissed as a stray scratch.

It was no scratch. She had copied the steward's ledgers for six winters and knew how a careful hand marked a thing that must be spoken rather than read. A stroke like that lifted a sound off the page. She sat back on her heels and tried it under her breath, first the way the letters ran, then the way they curled, and the sound came out soft and fell short at the end.
Tomas, the goatherd's boy, had been watching from the arch with his lantern held low. He came over without being asked and tipped the light until the shadows slid off the stone. 'That's the word for the stair,' he said. 'My gran says it means come up, but you have to say it from the bottom.' Maud followed the lantern. Beneath the lintel, half hidden by ivy, a dark gap opened in the wall where old steps went down into the hill, and the slanting mark, she saw now, had been pointing at it all along.
