Circular maze tattoo on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black circular maze sits on the outer upper arm, with concentric rings of passages leading to a small central ring and dot. The linework is bold and even, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The arm fills the right and centre of the frame against a grey knitted jumper and a blurred outdoor background of sand, grass and fallen leaves.

Grandad planted the maze the year my mother was born, so that the orchard would have something to argue about, he said. Rings of Bramleys and Discovery ran eight circles deep, with gaps in the hedge that he shifted each spring to confuse the neighbours' children. At the centre stood one old Russet and a bench nobody sat on. By late August the windfalls lay split in the long grass and the air smelled of cider vinegar, and that was when my cousin Tomas and I were let loose.

The rule was simple: keep one hand on the trunks and walk. Tomas ran. He always ran, cutting across to the middle through gaps that didn't exist, and came out grinning with his shirt full of bruised fruit. I walked. I counted the trees on each ring, nineteen on the outside, then fourteen, then nine, and I trusted the count more than the grass. Wasps hung over the drops like small, angry lanterns, and I kept my elbows tucked in.
The autumn Grandad died, nobody went near the orchard. The gate stayed shut through the wake and well into September. When I finally went in alone, one palm pressed to the first trunk, I reached the centre without a single wrong turn. The bench was still there. Someone had cut a small circle into the wood beside the seat, with a dot in its middle, and beneath it, in Grandad's careful capitals, WALK SLOWLY.
I sat down. Behind me a ladder creaked against a branch and apples dropped one by one into the grass. I stayed until the light went amber through the rings, then walked out the way I had come in, counting under my breath, and I did not look back at the middle until I reached the gate.
