Black line cat with a pink heart
Mixed · Flash
A stylised black line drawing of a cat in profile, with a raised head, pointed ears, whiskers and a long curving body. The thick, smooth black linework has no shading, and a small pink heart sits at the nose. The cat is centred on a plain white background.

The wedding at Hollin Ford nearly went wanting that morning, because nobody could find the ring. Osric the baker had sewn it into the hem of his sister's bodice the night before, and then the bodice was packed off to the wrong house. Mab Tullow was sent up the lane to ask the miller's wife, who said only that the cat had been sitting on the linen chest since dawn, looking pleased with itself.

The cat was a thin black thing that belonged to nobody. It walked the top of the stone wall with its head held high, as if it smelled rain before anyone else did. When Mab reached the chest the cat had gone, but the lid stood open, and beside the folded linen lay a small pink stone shaped like a heart. Mab had never seen it before. She took it for a sign and ran back down the lane with it clenched in her fist.
The ring was not in the hem. It was in the cat's dish by the back step, where the animal had carried it in the night and set it down like a gift it did not think much of. Mab laughed until she had to sit on the step. Osric swore he would never forgive the creature, and then he took the ring and wiped it on his apron. Above them the cat sat on the wall with its tail curled like a question mark, and it watched the bride walk to the church.
The old women of Hollin Ford still say there is a black cat on the wall at every wedding, though nobody has ever seen it arrive. Keep a heart in your pocket on the day, they tell the girls, and the cat will come looking for whoever forgot the ring.
