Black single-line drawing of a seated cat in profile and a dog's head and shoulders in profile, shown as a tattoo design on white with no body part visible.

Cat and dog line drawing

Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a seated cat in profile on the left and a dog's head and upper body on the right, both outlined with a continuous black line. The strokes vary in thickness and taper at the ears, nose and tail, giving a ribbon-like effect. The image is black on a plain white background, with the animals filling most of the frame.

Dear Ruth,

The north wall at Hollin Keep came down on Tuesday, a good forty feet of it, and I have spent three days lifting the fallen stones off the grass one at a time so I can set them back exactly where the masons left them in 1340. Pryce from the council says concrete would do the job by Friday. I told him I would sooner sleep in the sheep pen.

We have two lodgers up here now. A grey cat with a notched ear sits on the gatehouse every morning with her tail curled round her feet, and at ten o'clock a lanky brindle dog comes up from Hobson's farm and lies with his chin on my mortar bucket. Neither of them has growled at the other once. They just face the same way and watch me work as though I am the afternoon's entertainment.

On Thursday the cat climbed down, walked the length of the rubble, and sat beside the dog's shoulder. I held my breath, expecting a fight. Instead she leaned in and they both stared out over the valley toward Kirkby, and I kept my trowel still for a full quarter hour, which for me is a sort of miracle.

The last stone went in this afternoon, the one with a mason's mark cut into its underside, a little bird or maybe a rabbit, worn nearly smooth. When I turned round the cat and the dog were gone. Two sets of prints were pressed into the wet mortar beside it, heading off down the hill together. I have left them there. Come up at Easter and see.

Love, Tom
