Cartoon manatee outline tattoo
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single black line drawing of a plump, cartoon manatee with a small eye, whiskery snout, rounded flipper and stubby tail-like shape. The linework is even and unshaded, and the design sits alone in the middle of the frame against plain pale skin. There is a small brown mole near the top right, and the photo is taken straight on with soft, even light.

You were given one job at the wedding, which was to carry the rings up the shingle to the marquee, and you have already failed it. Mrs Pargeter, a plump and deeply unbothered manatee who lives under the harbour wall, has followed the catering van all the way from Penzance and is now lying across the ring cushion like a draught excluder. She is not interested in the cushion. She is interested in the sandwiches, and she is making her case with a slow, whiskery nudge against your knee.

The bride's mother arrives in a hat the size of a lifebelt. 'Get that creature off the aisle,' she says, and the groom's cousin, Dez, tries to shift Mrs Pargeter with a bucket of mackerel, which is a mistake. She rolls, sighs, and settles onto the front pew with her tail folded under her like a shopping bag. The vicar, who has been doing this for thirty-one years, says he has seen worse guests, though he cannot name one.
When the vows begin, the wind drops and the sea goes flat as a tray. The bride speaks her lines in a clear voice, the groom's voice cracks on the word forever, and Mrs Pargeter lifts her head, considers the proceedings, and gives a long, wet sneeze that sends a fan of spray across the front row. Nobody laughs until someone asks for the rings and you realise the cushion is empty.
You find them tucked in the folds of her neck, slightly sticky and entirely intact, and hand them over in time for the vicar to say the word. Mrs Pargeter closes her eyes. Everyone agrees afterwards that she was the only one there with a proper sense of occasion.
