Star charm anklet tattoo
Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded tattoo of a beaded anklet wraps around the ankle, with each bead rendered as a three-dimensional sphere with highlights and soft shadow. A small star charm hangs from the chain at the front of the ankle, shaded to show its edges and depth. The tattoo is in black and grey on pale skin against a patterned cream background.

The beads come off the dresser on the Saturday the strike ends, and you count them twice because your mother needs the number right. Twenty-three spheres of grey glass, each with a white thumbprint of light where the window catches it. Your father bought the chain from a pedlar at Pontypridd market the summer before Tarren Level flooded. He never once fastened it on anything, but he never let it leave the house either.

Mrs Hughes from the chapel says a charm wants a story to hold it up, so you sit at the kitchen table with a pair of snips and a biscuit tin full of old lamp-checks. Each brass disc is stamped with a man's number, and yours is 417, the one he wore on his chest the last shift he walked to the cage. You cut the smallest one into a star, five points, and bend it a fraction so it will turn when the light moves across it.
Your mother holds the chain up against the window and says nothing for a long time. Then she asks you to hook it the way the pedlar did, star at the front, and you do, your fingers clumsy with the tiny clasp.
Outside, the tips and terraces are grey as ever. But when you walk down to the gate the star swings out ahead of the beads and takes the first thin sun the valley has seen since October, and it points up the hill, away from the shaft.
