Black mandala tattoo on a shoulder
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala design with a central rosette and layered petal rings sits on the upper shoulder. It is rendered in black linework with grey shading and fine patterned detail in the inner rings. The plain skin and pearl necklace at the left edge frame the tattoo against a pale wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ada had drafted the rosette four times on the back of a coal merchant's bill, and each time the petals came round one short. Mrs Vosper lifted the paper, held it to the grey window over the Otter, and counted under her breath. 'Eleven. Twelve wants to be there. Go round again.'

So Ada went round again. She drew a centre no bigger than a thimble, then rings of petals stepping outward like the ripples in the mill pond, each ring keyed to the one inside it. Between them she worked the ladder stitches her mother had taught her, and hung a row of seed-dots at the outer edge, leaving the last petal open so the pattern could breathe. The veil was for St Michael's on the Saturday, and the whole thing had to sit on a collar no wider than two hands.
On Friday night the snow came down over the Blackdown Hills and the lamps burned low. Ada pinned the final ring with a brass pin, and the pattern closed on itself exactly as Mrs Vosper had said it would, twelve petals meeting at the start as if they had never been parted. Mrs Vosper ran her thumb along the edge and said nothing for a long while.
'Well,' she said at last, 'that's the trouble with a circle. You only get to start it once.' She sent Ada to bed and cut the lace free before dawn, and the first light came through the pattern and laid a rosette of shadow across the floorboards.
