Small cross tattoo on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A full-length mirror selfie of a person in a loose white t-shirt, light blue skinny jeans and white sneakers, holding a phone in front of their face. A small, simple black cross is visible on the forearm, drawn in thin, even linework with no shading. The palette is neutral, with the white clothing and pale tiled floor, and a dark chequered handbag sits on a stool to the right.

The tide was already sliding across the slipway when Nan handed me the tin of black paint and a brush with its bristles worn to a point. "Smaller than you think," she said. "A cross on a boat is a promise, not a boast."

I knelt on the wet concrete at the bow of the Morag Ann and drew the upright first, one stroke from the stem to just below the gunwale, then the bar across it. My hand wanted to make it bold, the way the lads on the mainland painted their names a yard high in red. Nan had taught me otherwise. Thin lines, even as a ruled page, nothing that would shout over the wind.

She had painted those marks for forty years. Every boat that left Ardcraig carried one, little more than a tick on the wood, and every boat came back or didn't, and the island never asked which was which. When her husband went out in February, she painted his cross that same morning, then walked home and didn't speak until supper.

The Morag Ann came back that spring with the cross still on her bow, the paint scraped but never broken. Nan ran her thumb along the upright and said nothing for a long time. Then she held out the tin again. "Touch it up," she said. "Thin. And don't you dare make it pretty."
