Dotted henna-style ornament on a foot

Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot is photographed from the side with a central medallion of dense dots and curved lines across the top, flanked by a dotted vine that loops up towards the ankle. Smaller dots and short lines decorate the toes and the outer edge of the foot. The design is dark brown on skin in a sepia-toned photo, so it may be henna rather than tattoo ink, and it is composed symmetrically around the medallion.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nesta Pryce pricked her maps with a darning needle, because a pen would not hold on the damp paper the colliery office handed out. Every gallery in Cwm Glas got a dot where the timbers were sound and a loop where they were not. Her husband laughed at it, and then he stopped laughing, because she was usually right about the roof.

The winter the Number Four level came down, the rescue men dug for three days and found only the first forty yards. Nesta sat at the pit head with her map flat on her knee. She had pricked a path out to the old drift, a dotted vine that ran up past a dense ring of holes, and at its heart a small cross where the fresh air came in from the bank.

Her son Dai had gone down the old drift that morning to fetch his brother's lamp, and nobody had thought to tell him it was shut. Nesta put her finger on the dotted line and said it plainly to the foreman: he will come out at the cross, if he keeps to the dots and does not stop for the loops. The foreman sent a boy with a rope, and the boy found Dai sitting at the cross with his lamp gone dark, tracing the holes on his palm with one finger as if they were the same pattern.

They say the map hung above her kitchen range until the pit closed, and that the children of Cwm Glas learned their letters by pricking dots into the backs of their hands with a pin, a ring for the cross and a vine for the way home. Nesta only ever said that you could not get lost on a path you had counted.
