Flat-lay of black clothing and boots beside a flash-style design of three black silhouette birds with small script, shown without a body placement.

Black outfit flat lay with bird tattoo design

Black and grey · Flash

A flat-lay collage of black clothing: a sleeveless tank top, a quilted leather biker jacket, leather-look leggings and lace-up ankle boots, with the words Dauntless Style in the corner. Beside them sits a drawing of three black silhouette birds in flight with two lines of small script, which reads as a tattoo design rather than a photo of skin. The image uses solid black shapes on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

Dear Marnie, I didn't expect to see you at the reunion, and I'm glad you came, even if you spent the whole evening by the sandwich table pretending not to watch Mr Hollis fight with the projector. Do you remember the Easter we walked out past the quarry on the wrong side of the fence, the three of us bunched together like rooks on a wire, daring each other to touch the rusted gate? You always said we'd grow up sensible. Look at us now.

Walking home from the Crown last night I kept thinking about the swifts that nested under the chapel roof. Every May they came screaming over the playing fields in a black ribbon, and Sister Agatha would stop her lesson to glare at the windows as if the birds had done it on purpose. Nobody ever told them where to go. They simply went, up and over the sports hall and out towards the reservoir, and came back the next year regardless.

I'm writing because Gemma asked what I'd done with my life and I found I didn't have a neat answer. I have a van with a dodgy starter motor, a flat above the bakery on Carlow Street, and a pencil drawing pinned above my desk of three birds in flight, with a line of small writing underneath that I copied from the back of your old exercise book. I am defiant, it says. The bank manager read it upside down when I took it in as a joke, and he didn't laugh.

Come up to the Crown on Saturday. Bring the photographs from the quarry trip. I want to see whether we looked as stubborn as I remember.

Love, Jen
