Life ring with rope on the wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A life ring with rope wrapped around its outer edge and a loose rope end trailing to the right. The ring is shaded with soft grey gradients and bold dark outlines, and the central hole is left as bare skin. The design sits centrally on the inner forearm, shot straight on against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ring was still wet when Nell Trewin hauled it up the slipway, its rope end dragging behind like a line she had forgotten to coil. Her father had scraped the orange paint off years ago, and what remained was grey canvas and the faded name of the boat it had hung on, the Constance, lost on the Hanlon rocks before Nell was born. She had never seen the ring thrown in anger. She knew only the stories, and every one of them began with the rope.

Her father had taught her the knot that kept the tail loose. You never make the end fast on a ring, he said. The end is for the man in the water, so he has something to close his hand on. People think the ring is the rescue, but it is the empty middle that matters. That hole is what lets you pass it over a head and down onto a pair of shoulders before the sea takes them.

On the night the Constance went, a boy of fifteen called Davey Oates threw the ring from the quay wall, though he could not swim a stroke himself. The rope unrolled in a long grey curve. Two men caught the end and hauled, and Nell sat on the slipway steps with the cold seeping through her coat, counting the coils until her father came up the path, soaked to the bone, one hand locked round the line.

She hung the ring back on its hook in the boathouse that evening, the tail left loose on purpose, as he would have wanted it.
