Geometric arrow and circle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo sits on the inner forearm and combines a circle with a central dot, open triangles, small dots and zigzag lines, with a long arrow running up the arm. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The design is shown against a patterned light background, with the hand resting at the lower left of the frame.

Hanne Wulf had been wrong about the pass for eleven days, and the mule had started to say so. She set the brass theodolite on its three legs at the saddle of the col, levelled the bubble twice, and sighted down the grey scree toward Sorrel Basin, where the office in Kessling expected a clean line by the end of the month. The wind kept tugging at her notebook. Behind her, Tobiah paid out the steel chain with the patience of a man who had stopped asking why.

She drove three stakes into the shale and tied them with red cord, making a small triangle that would hold the whole valley in place. At the apex she scratched a dot into a boulder with the point of her knife, the way her grandfather had taught her. Every point in a survey is only a promise that someone will come back and find it. The angles came out neat on the page, but the eastern ridge kept refusing to close, a gap of two degrees that sat in her stomach like a swallowed stone.
On the twelfth morning the cloud lifted and she saw it. Chiselled into the rock face above the old path was an arrow, long and thin, its head pointing through a notch in the ridge that no map had ever shown. Her grandfather had cut it there in the year the mountain took his first theodolite. The bearing ran straight through the gap, and the gap was exactly two degrees off her figures. She had been measuring the wrong mountain for eleven days.
She redrew the triangle by hand, closed the line, and wrote the bearing beneath the arrow's shaft in pencil. Tobiah lifted the chain without being asked. They walked through the notch together with the mule trailing behind, and the valley opened below them exactly where the arrow had been pointing all along.
