Black panther with roses and flowers
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A black panther moves down the limb, with its head turned back towards the viewer and its paws visible at the lower edge. Red roses with dark outlines and yellow five-petal flowers, set among green leaves, fill the space around the cat. Solid black fill and bold outlines are combined with flat red, yellow and green, and the design is shown against pale skin under clear plastic wrap.

Mr Okonedo had the late shift at Halsey Road, and by midnight the platforms belonged to the pigeons and the sweepers. The last northbound had gone out trailing its red lamp through the drizzle, and he was stamping lost property tickets when the parcel trolley at the end of Platform Two started to hum. Not a motor. Something lower, like a cat settling its weight.

He went down with his torch. Past a bench where a woman slept under a good wool coat, a black shape moved along the wet tiles with its head turned back over one shoulder, as though it had been waiting to be followed. Its paws made no sound. A florist's crate had split on the trolley, and red roses with heavy dark petals had spilled into the gutter with yellow flowers and sprigs of green. The cat stepped through them the way a man walks through a market he owns.
"Yours?" he asked the sleeping woman, but she only murmured something about a wedding in Leeds. The panther reached the lost property hatch, rose onto its hind legs with its forepaws on the sill, and looked at him with eyes like two spent matches. Okonedo found his hand reaching for the ledger and the pen on its chain.
At quarter to one it dropped down, padded out through the gap in the fence beside the bike shed, and was gone. In the morning the ledger had one new entry in his own neat hand: Item, one panther, black, unclaimed, found Platform Two. Beside it he wrote the time. In the box marked collected by, he left nothing at all, the way you do when you know the owner has already been and gone.
