Black rose and Dreamer script on forearms

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black dotwork rose with leaves covers the outer forearm of the left arm, with its petals built from stippled shading and bold outlines. On the right inner wrist, the word Dreamer is written in thin black script lettering. The image is taken from above against a dark grey textured surface, with both hands raised and painted nails visible.

Dear Nell, The 7.14 was late again, so I have been sitting on the bench at Cold Ashby with the back of a timetable for a desk, watching rain bead on the rose bushes the council planted along the fence. Dad would call them a waste of good soil. I think they look like they are trying to stay warm.

You asked in your last letter about the engraver who came up from Leeds in March. He did the brass plate for the new engine, the one they christened Greyhen, and he worked a black rose into its corner. He did it all in dots, thousands of them, so that from a yard off the petals looked like frost on a window and only close up did they turn into a flower. The stationmaster said it was a foolish use of a fortnight. The engraver just shrugged and said dots were the only honest way to draw a thing that had to be held in the hand.

Here is the part you will laugh at. Under the nameplate, on the inside of the cab door where the driver keeps his cards, someone had scratched a single word in small looping letters. Dreamer. Nobody owns up to it. Ada in the ticket office swears it was there before the engine ever left the works, but Ada also believes the Fenwick line runs on goodwill and sheep dip.

I have decided it was the engraver, and that he meant it for whoever sits in the cab on the night shift, when the signals turn green one by one up the valley and nobody is awake to see them but the coal and the moon. I shall post this at the junction and tell you the rest when the 7.14 finally arrives. It is coming now. I can hear it humming across the points.
