Orcas swimming in a teal ocean on a lower leg
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
Two adult orcas and a smaller orca swim through a blue and teal sea, with the largest whale rising diagonally across the upper half of the design. The animals are shaded with smooth gradients in black, grey and white, giving them a realistic, three-dimensional appearance. The background uses soft, loose teal and turquoise washes that fade into the skin at the edges, and the composition wraps around the leg.

Mairi had been counting the pod for three days before anyone believed her. The harbour men at Ardcastle said the whales were passing through the way they always did in April, that the big bull was only showing off, and that the small one would find its mother soon enough. She kept a tally on the back of the tide tables pinned in the ferry office, two grown orcas and a calf no longer than a rowing boat, and each morning she added a line under the last.

On the fourth day the calf came in close to the slipway, circling the mooring chains with its white eye patch turned toward her. The bull stayed out beyond the kelp, rising now and then with a slow roll of black back, and when a fishing boat started its engine he surfaced straight across its bow and held there until the skipper cut the power and swore at him.
Mairi did not swear. She went down the slipway with a bucket of mackerel she had bought with the last of her wages and tipped it into the shallows, the way her grandmother had once fed the seals off the pier. The calf nosed the silver fish and then looked up at her as if it had been waiting for someone sensible.
The bull came in at dusk, closer than anyone had seen him, and lay alongside the calf with a long breath that sounded almost like relief. Mairi wrote the final line in the tally that night: three. Beside it she drew a small blue wave, and below that, because nobody else in the village would ever check, the date the pod finally turned for open water.
