Rosebud and swirling vine pattern
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A repeating all-over pattern of solid black rosebuds, teardrop leaves and looping vine scrolls on a plain white ground. The shapes are bold silhouettes with no interior shading or fine detail, and the buds are arranged so the design tiles evenly across the frame. The image is entirely black ink on white, with no colour.

Dear Ada, the vines came up over the wall again this morning, right across the path to the boathouse, and I stood there with the shears for a full minute before I cut them. Mrs Pyle from the post office says the whole island has gone to bramble since the ferry stopped, but I have counted seventeen new buds on the trellis by the kitchen door and not one of them is from the seed you planted.

I found your tin under the stairs, the one with the cracked lid and the teardrop leaves pressed flat inside. There was a note folded in with the seed packet, in your square capitals: WAIT FOR THE SWIRLS, THEY ALWAYS COME BACK. I thought it was a joke about the weather. Then on Thursday the curls of new growth lifted off the fence in a long unbroken line, like someone had drawn them with one stroke of a brush, and I laughed out loud on the empty road.
I am sending this with the Tuesday boat, if the boat comes. Keep the lamp lit on the point. If the fog lifts before the tide turns, I will be the small dark shape at the end of the pier, holding a pair of shears and a very stubborn grin. Yours, always, Marguerite.
