Black spiral with watercolour wash

Other · Mixed · Photo

A bold black spiral sits at the centre of the design, drawn with even, heavy linework that winds inwards. Soft pink, violet and turquoise washes bleed outwards around the spiral, with speckled edges and some colour variation. The tattoo is centred in the frame, with the surrounding skin and plastic sheeting visible at the edges.

The tide was already running hard past the Gannet Race when Ivo cut the engine and let us drift. I thought he had lost his mind. The other three boats from Porthkerris had gone wide, hauling their pots along the edge of the ground, but the Morwenna Rose sat square in the middle of the whirl, turning slowly on dark water while the sky above went the colour of a bruised peach.

'Look at it,' he said, and handed me the tiller as if it were a cup of tea. The sea round us ran turquoise where the shallows lifted the light, then violet where the deep water sank, and a pink stain of dawn bled across all of it. Spray lay on the surface in speckles like flecks from a painter's brush. Every few seconds a gull's shadow slid around in the same slow curl the water made, inward, inward, towards a hole I could not see and did not want to.

My father had drowned on this ground the winter I turned nine. Ivo had never once said his name since, but he had taught me the rule the way other men teach a prayer: the spiral pulls you in, so you row against it, one stroke outward for every turn it makes. He took the oars and I watched his hands, scarred and steady, while the boat tipped and groaned beneath us.

We came out with the nets full of pollock and a fresh blister on my palm. Looking back, the ring was only the sea arguing with itself. As we pulled clear, the water behind us smoothed to glass, and for a moment it held the whole pink sky, still turning, before the next tide came in and wiped it clean.
