Spiral with small circle on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black line spiral sits on the inner forearm, with a small open circle touching its outer edge at the top. The linework is even and simple, and the fresh tattoo is covered with clear film and two strips of tape. A small red mark sits to the left of the spiral, and the image shows only black ink on pale skin.

The lamp at Scarrow Head had been turning for ninety-one years, and Nell Pardoe had kept its clockwork wound for eleven of them, long enough to know that the gears remembered their own rhythm better than any ledger did. That Tuesday the brass spindle stuck halfway through its climb, and she spent an hour on the cold iron stairs with an oilcan and a rag, coaxing it free one revolution at a time.

When the light finally swept out across the grey water, she sat on the bottom step and copied the lamp's track into the logbook the way her predecessor had taught her, a line that wound inward from the edge of the page toward a point in the middle. Her father had called it the snail trail. The old keepers had called it the way home for ships that had lost their bearings, because a spiral drawn on a chart told a captain where the rocks ended and the channel began.

She was still drawing when the post boat's horn sounded below the cliff. Jack Penhallow stepped off onto the landing with a parcel under one arm, and when he saw the page he laughed, a short surprised sound. He pointed at the little ring she had added at the outer turn, the one she always drew to mark the bell buoy. Then he tapped the ink with a damp thumb, leaving a faint smear. "You always put that circle in," he said. "Why?"

Nell looked at the spiral, then past it to the light, which had come round again and was painting the wet rocks gold. "So I know where I started," she said, and closed the book.
