Scissors and cut here line on calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A bold black pair of scissors sits on the outer calf, with a dotted line running from the blades and the words cut here in small black lettering beside it. A small faded design in green and yellow ink is visible on the top of the foot near the ankle. The photograph is taken from a side angle against a dark leather surface, with the leg filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mr Hollins had chalked the line before he went home on Thursday, and by Monday morning the bolt of green worsted still bore it, a dotted track running off the selvedge towards the shears he kept on a nail by the window. Dilys pretended not to look at it. She had been his apprentice for eleven months and had yet to be trusted with anything sharper than a tailor's chalk.

The cloth had been bought in Bradford forty years earlier, for a coat that never got made. It had lived folded in a drawer above the coal scuttle while Hollins's wife grew ill and then grew quiet, and now a grandson was to be christened in Wakefield and someone had finally asked for it. Hollins had no patience for sentiment about cloth. 'Wool that is never cut is only waiting for moths,' he said, and he set the blades on the chalk without pausing.
Dilys took the shears from the nail when he held them out to her. Her hands were not steady, and she thought he would take them back. He only watched her, arms folded, the way he watched a seam he had already decided was crooked. 'Cut where the chalk is,' he said. 'Not where you are frightened.'
The first pass made a sound like tearing paper, then a long clean note that filled the shop. The green fell open into two pieces. Hollins took the larger for the coat and gave her the offcut, a strip no wider than her palm with the dotted line still running along one edge. She pinned it above her own bench, where it stayed for years.
