Ankh-style cross tattoo on wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine black outline tattoo shows an ankh-style cross, with an oval loop above a horizontal bar and a lower section containing smaller looped and angular shapes. The lines are uniform in black ink with a faint purple edge along parts of the outline, possibly from healing. The tattoo sits centrally on pale skin against a dark background, with the composition cropped to the wrist and lower forearm.

Dearest Nell,

We cleared Cape Horn on the eleventh, and I have not been dry since. The Marguerite Ann rolls like a drunk man going home, and Cook has taken to swearing at the barometer as if it owed him money. Still, I am writing because of the chest.
Mr Hollis had it opened in the lazarette on Tuesday, the one he calls his cabin trunk though nobody has ever seen him sleep in it. Inside, under a tangle of oilskins, lay a length of cord wound around a brass piece no longer than my thumb. It is an ankh, Nell, the Egyptian sort with the round top, but flattened and with a hooked foot like a fishing gaff. Hollis said it was the key to a house in Valparaiso, and that the house had a green door and a mule that would not stand still. I do not believe a word of it, but I kept looking at the thing until the lamp guttered.
I have decided to go ashore with it when we reach port and find the door, if it exists. You will think me mad. Perhaps I am only lonely for something that stays put.
Tell Mother the bread here is terrible and I eat it anyway. Tell her I wear the wool stockings.
Your brother, Tom
