Black tribal flame design
Black and grey · Flash
A single solid black flame-like motif forms a V shape, with two tapering tips curving upward and a pointed base. The edges are smooth and the shape is filled with no internal linework or shading. It is set against a plain white background with the motif centred and filling most of the frame.

The old smith never drew his flames with a pencil. He took a length of hot rod straight from the fire, laid it on the slate and pressed the tip down the way you'd press a thumb into dough, and whatever shape stayed was the one he wanted. Nobody in Porthgwidden had a better hand for a V. I stood at the bellows that first winter, pumping until my shoulders ached, and watched him fold the iron back on itself twice before he let it cool.

The chapel wanted a bell hook, the harbour wanted lamp brackets, and the widow Tregear wanted a gate that would not sag. He gave each of them the same mark, two tongues of fire rising from a single point, and folks said it looked like a gull coming in low over the water. I thought it looked like something trying to climb out of the ground. I said so once, and he laughed so hard he had to sit down on the coal scuttle.
The spring I turned nineteen he went down with his chest and did not get up. I was left with his tongs, his hammer with the cracked haft, and the order book with one job still open: a sign for the new fish cellar, to hang on Monday. I beat the design out myself. My first flame came out fat in the belly, so I quenched it, reheated it and tried again until the points ran true.
On Monday the sign went up over the cellar door, black as a stove lid against the whitewash. Mrs Tregear walked past, stopped, and told me that was his hand, not mine. I did not argue. I lifted the cooling iron from the tub, still ticking in the cold air, and went back inside to start the next one.
