Gemini zodiac symbol on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of the Gemini zodiac symbol, two vertical strokes joined by horizontal bars at top and bottom, sits on the inner wrist. The lines are bold and slightly rough at the edges, with solid black ink and no shading. The background is a pale grey wall, and the skin tone is warm, with the tattoo as the only subject.

Sit down, the lot of you, and keep your hands off those windfalls till I've finished. It's late August, the wasps are drunk on cider, and the old Cordery orchard is going gold at the edges. You want a story, so I'll give you the one about the twins.

Nell and Bet came into the world on the same wet morning, and their father planted two trees that spring, one for each, down by the beck. The trees grew straight as gateposts and leaned towards each other like they were sharing a secret. Folk in the village said the pair of them looked like a gate you could walk through and come out the other side a different person.
When they were sixteen they quarrelled over a ladder and didn't speak for a whole harvest. Nell took the eastern rows and Bet the western, and the wind carried blossom from one side to the other without asking either of them. That winter their grandmother, who knew her grafting, cut a limb from each tree, bound the two together with waxed twine and told them to wait. Nobody believed a union like that would take.
Come spring the bark had knitted over the join, a bar of new wood laid across the gap at top and bottom. Bet went off to the coast the year after, and Nell stayed with the ladders. The next September that crossing branch bore two kinds of apple, sharp green and sweet red, and Nell picked the lot and posted a basket to the coast every week. Now, who wants a windfall?
