The boat is off again until Thursday, so you will have to wait for your ticket the way the rest of us wait for everything, which is to say with a cup of tea and a sour face. I have the timetable board open on the kitchen table as I write, the chalk gone grey from years of rubbing. Your grandfather Ezra would have wiped it clean and drawn the lines himself every Sunday, in the same square capitals he used on the fish boxes.

You asked me last week why he never let anyone stand at his shoulder when he did it. I told you he was private. That was only half of it. He had the words PLAN AHEAD inked across his knuckles by a man who came over on the Thursday boat with a case of needles and no fixed address. Ezra said afterwards that the fellow had made the letters look like a rule of the sea written on the hands that had to keep it. He wore them through forty winters of hauling, and the ink went the colour of a bruise that never quite heals.

I found a stub of spare chalk in his coat last month, wrapped in a bus ticket to Aberdeen. He had never once been to Aberdeen. So I am sending you the chalk. Draw your own line on the wall of wherever you end up, and when the weather turns, which it will, plan ahead for the boat that doesn't come.
