Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic black and grey tattoo of a blaster pistol with visible panel detail, trigger guard and barrel shading sits on the outer thigh. The words HAN SHOT FIRST are stacked in small capitals below the gun, and the shading uses soft greys for depth. The background shows denim shorts, sneakers and a red patterned floor, with the person's face not in frame.

The chief steward found a dog-eared print in the purser's locker, wrapped in an oilskin with a note pinned to it that read "for when you're bored, from the last idiot." We threaded it through the old projector on the bridge deck while the watch kept one eye on the radar and the other on us. The bolt went one way, then the other, and the whole thing was over in less time than it takes to light a pipe. Ruddock didn't say anything for a long while. Then he said, "Go on, look at the wrist," and we all looked, and I'll admit the wrist was doing something I hadn't noticed in forty years of watching.

He handed me the tin without a word. I prised it open with the bosun's knife and offered him the first peach, which he ate standing up at the rail, watching the wake go white and straight behind us toward Valparaiso.
