Her father had always said the big top listened. On still nights he pressed his ear to the centre pole and reported what the canvas had told him: the lions were sulking, the rigger was sweet on the seamstress, another hard winter was coming. He had painted a word in gold on the door of the wagon, in letters that curled like smoke, and when people asked what it meant he only tapped his ear and grinned. The word was Blessed. Nobody ever asked him why.

The buyer from the council arrived at dusk with a clipboard and a torch. He said the land would make good flats, and Nell nodded, because he was probably right, and because the ground had already begun to forget the circus. She went to the wagon afterwards and scraped at the gold with her thumbnail. It came away in a flake no bigger than a sequin.

She stood alone in the ring and listened. Somewhere behind the stables a horse shifted and blew, and the sound carried across the whole empty field the way every sound once had under the canvas. Nell closed her fingers over the gold, took one last look at the bare poles, and went to find the gate.
