Small flower tattoo inside the ear

Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo

A small five-petalled flower sits inside the upper ear, drawn with a bold black outline and filled with soft pink and red ink. A clear gem stud sits in the centre of the flower, and a stud and silver hoop earring are worn in the lobe below. The shot is a sharp, close, front-on view with the rest of the head out of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tom, the lock at Hanwell gave us a bad night, and I'm writing this on the cabin step with the lamp turned low and grit still in my palms. Dad would have had us through by midnight, but Dad is laid up in Brentford with his knee, so the tiller is mine now, and so is the sulking.

You'll remember the flower Gran painted on the cabin door. Mine was always the small one by the hatch, five petals with a black line round each so the rain couldn't wash it out. She said a flower on a boat was a promise to come back to it. The paint went dull years ago, and in the spring she pressed a clear glass bead into the middle, where the seed would be, so it caught the lamp when we passed under the bridges.

Last Thursday the bead came loose and rolled into the bilge. I went after it with a torch and nearly gave up, then found it wedged in the coal dust under the bunk, still whole. I threaded it on a bit of wire and I've worn it since, which Dad says is daft for a bargee, though he hasn't asked for it back.

Come home at Easter. I'll touch up the petals where the sun has faded them, and you can hold the brush steady while I do the outlines. Mind the second lock on the way down, the gate sticks. Your sister, Nell.
