Small owl tattoo behind the ear

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small black owl with round eyes and a simple outline is tattooed on the skin behind the ear. The linework is thin and slightly uneven, in solid black ink with no visible shading. The close crop shows the ear and dark hair, with pale neck skin filling the rest of the frame.

The owl on the toll post at Scarrow Bridge had one eye that stayed a little open, and everyone who crossed knew it was watching the wrong side of the river. The rule was old and nobody had written it down. The owl asked one question of every traveller, and the answer had to be small. Ruth had prepared a grand one about cattle and a priest. When the bird turned its round head and asked, 'What did you leave behind?', she said, 'Nothing I wanted.' The goat bleated, the owl clicked its beak twice, and the gate swung open.

On the far bank a boy was waiting with a lantern, sent by a mother who had crossed the same bridge forty years before with a secret in her shoe. He asked Ruth whether the owl had let her through. She said yes. He asked what she had told it. She said it was none of his business, and he laughed, because that was the answer the owl liked best.

Ruth walked up the path with the goat and did not look back, though the owl was watching her go with its one eye open, the way it always did, to see who would turn around.
