Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of an ear, with dark hair pulled across the side of the head and a black stud or cord visible. The three black numerals 269 are tattooed on the inner ear in a simple, clean outline style with even linework. The skin is pale and the image is otherwise plain, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Abernethy at the Harrow Road exchange never once asked me to repeat a number. She said you learned to hear the shape of a number before its digits, the way you know a hymn from its first breath. So when the night bell rang at ten past two and a woman's voice came down the line, slurred and cheerful, asking for two six nine, I knew the street before she gave it to me and roughly how much gin she had taken.

I pushed the cord into the board and rang twice. A man answered on the first ring, which was odd for that hour in Kilburn. Mrs Abernethy had also taught us to leave a silence before speaking into a strange room, so I left one, and the woman filled it with a laugh that snapped halfway through.

She wanted nothing more than for the man to stay on the line until her cab came up the road. "He's my brother," she said, "and he owes me a lift to Euston and a bit of his time." He said he would wait. I listened to them talk about a kettle, a cracked window, and a pigeon that had been nesting in the gutter since March, and I found I was rooting for the pigeon.

At six the shift ended and the light came grey over the rooftops. I wrote 269 in pencil on the back of my hand so I would not forget the digits that had carried a stranger's voice across London all night. By the time I reached the bus stop the numbers had smudged across my knuckles, and I let them fade on their own.
