Fine line black script tattoo reading Blessed, with a small heart and a dangling rosary with cross, on a person's lower back.

Blessed script with rosary on lower back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black script word reading Blessed sits across the lower back, with a small outlined heart at the start of the B. A thin rosary with beads and a cross hangs from the left side of the lettering. The linework is fine and even, with no colour, and the skin is shown in soft, natural light against a dark top and a patterned waistband.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp had gone out twice that week, and Nessa Carrick was the one who climbed the iron stairs to see why. Her father's knees had given up on the hundred and twelve steps in March. So she carried the paraffin up in the dark, her torch swinging, and counted the rungs aloud the way her mother used to count beads.

The rosary belonged to the Doherty boat. Old Mick Doherty had left it on the windowsill of the watch room the night the Marguerite went onto the Skerry, and nobody had come back for it. It was black glass, the cross worn smooth as a pebble, and it hung from the brass hook beside the lens where the light caught it on every sweep. Nessa had never been a believer in much beyond tides, but she liked the way it turned slowly while the beam went round.

On the third night the mechanism stuck again. She knelt on the cold boards with a spanner and a tin of oil, her fingers numb, and the rosary swung near her cheek. Blessed, her father would say when the fog lifted and the boats came in with their hulls whole, a word he used the way other men used good morning. She had never once thought of it as a promise.

By morning the clockwork ran true. Nessa meant to post the rosary to Doherty's sister in Oban, but she found herself walking instead to the harbour wall with it in her coat pocket. The gulls were loud. A single trawler was coming in slow and low, its wake a white thread across the grey. She lifted a hand to it, the way you do, and kept the beads in her fist until the boat was safe at the quay.
