Cross and Blessed script on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black tattoo shows a plain upright cross with its crossbar running into the word Blessed written in a flowing script. The linework is solid and even, with no shading, and the ink is a dark black. The photograph is taken close up with a warm, vintage-style tone, showing the wrist and hand against a light patterned fabric.

Master Hal Redfern had me up the scaffold before the frost was off the stones, the old chapel wall of Carrow Keep leaning out over the burn as if it wanted to fall in. He chalked a cross on the sill stone, stood back with his cap in his hands, and asked me to cut a word beside it. Not Latin, he said. Something my mother would have said over the bread.

I had never cut a letter with a curl to it. Square capitals, yes, the kind that stand up straight on a memorial. But Hal wanted the word running off the crossbar like breath off a cold window, so I spent three days on a board of planed oak practising the loops before I touched the stone. My chisel slipped twice. The second time I swore, and Hal laughed until he had to sit on a fallen merlon.
On the Friday the sun came out pale over the moor and I finished the last stroke of the d. Hal ran his thumb along the groove and said nothing for so long I thought I had spoiled it. Then he asked who the word was for. I told him it was for nobody, it was just what the chapel ought to say, and he nodded as though that was the answer he had been waiting for.
Hal died the winter after. The keep is a ruin now, but the cross still stands above the arch with its word running off the end of it. When the rain comes down, the water finds every stroke I cut and follows it round the loop of the B and out over the edge, and I like to think that keeps the old stone honest.
