Blocky geometric mark on the inner wrist

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black geometric mark made of thick, interlocking rectangular strokes sits on the inner wrist and lower forearm. The fine skin texture and clean edges suggest crisp linework and solid black fill, with no shading. The black and white photograph is taken close up from above, with the palm turned up and a checked shirt and jeans visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hall at Hollin Cross had a floor of ash boards that rang when you stamped on them, and the caller, Mabel Strood, had burned one mark into the boards beside the door before the fiddlers came in from the wet. Nobody asked her what it meant. She said a dancer who lost the set in the dark could follow the lines until they brought them out at the lamp.

The winter the river rose, a boy called Eli Parr came to the hall in his brother's boots, laced wrong, and stayed past midnight when the candles went out one by one. The hall filled with black and the fiddles kept on regardless. He could not find the door. He got down on his knees and ran his fingers along the scorched lines, turning at each square corner the way the mark turned, in and out and in again, until his hand touched cold air and the lamp stood there.

Mabel was waiting for him with the lamp lit. "You followed it," she said. He said he had only kept his hand on the wood. "That's the trick," she said. "Nobody ever finds the way by looking."

Every spring after, the children of Hollin Cross learned the mark before they learned their letters, drawing it in the mud with two fingers, rectangle folded inside rectangle, until they could make it with their eyes shut and never once lose the door.
