At the Harvest Hall in Sallow Cross, the fiddler Amos Pell kept one rule chalked above the door: no man crosses the floor without a partner's leave. Nobody remembered who first wrote it. It had been rubbed out and rewritten so many times that the wall beneath had gone grey where the chalk sat.

Nell Garrow came in every Saturday with ink on her knuckles from her father's bookbinding shop and stood by the lamps. The lads asked her to dance and she said no, and they asked again, and she said no again. At last a drover with mud on his boots called her a stuck-up thing and told her to go home and dance like a lady, since that was all she was good for. He laughed, and the room laughed with him.
She did not go home. She crossed to the fiddler, set a penny on the rail of his stool, and asked for the slow reel the old women danced. Amos played it. Nell took the drover's hand and led him the length of the floor, turning him at every bar. By the second turn he had stopped laughing, and by the fourth he had forgotten the room was watching.
When the tune ended she let go of his hand and said that was how a lady danced: she led, and the man kept time, and if he had a complaint he could take it up with the chalk on the wall. The next morning Amos wiped the old rule away and wrote a new one in capitals that wandered uphill, and anyone who came through the door could read it: LIKE A LADY.
