The snow has sealed the lane since Tuesday, and the Crane's Rest has eleven guests and one pot of honey that will not last the week. You are in the scullery at six, pressing the last jar of summer's honeysuckle syrup through muslin, because Mrs Ashby swears it will loosen the chests of the carter and the two drovers who came in off the moor half frozen.

Your grandmother kept the vine. It grew over the wall of the old coaching yard, orange trumpets hanging where the stonework met the gate, and every June she sent you up the ladder with a basket and a rule: take only what the bees have left. The berries were for nobody. They were blue and bitter, and she called them the vine's pocket money, which made no sense, and you never asked.

The carter's boy comes in with the milk and wants to know what the sticky pot is. You tell him it is summer, bottled, and he laughs until he coughs. Upstairs the wind leans on the shutters. Somebody is singing badly in the snug and somebody else is telling him to stop.

By nine the snow has stopped and the lane has a white road cut through it. You carry the last jar to the ostler's wife, who wanted it for her husband, and on the way back you stop at the yard gate, where the old vine has long since died back to grey stalks under a drift. You pull one stem free. Under the snow, a single green shoot is still holding on, with a blue berry no bigger than a pea.
