Stacked diamond geometric on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm and loosely closed hand are shown against a plain black background. The tattoo is a geometric motif of three nested diamonds, built from fine stippled dots that create shading and depth. The image is black and grey and centred on the tattoo, with soft, even lighting on the skin.

Mr Oddie had counted the mirror panels every morning for eleven weeks, and every morning there were fewer. Each was a lozenge of silvered glass set in a frame of blackened ash, and the frames nested inside one another like the paper boxes his mother kept her buttons in. When the tent was lit, anyone stepping through the flap could see themselves repeated down a tunnel of themselves, smaller and smaller, until the last reflection was no more than a grey point.

Vesey, who owned the show and most of its debts, came in with his hat already off. The council had the ground from Monday. The bears had gone to a farm near Doncaster, the horses to a man in Leeds who did not pay in full, and the mirror tent was to be sold by the yard to a scrap dealer who did not care what it had been. Oddie nodded and went on working. He had a diamond point, the only tool he trusted for fine work, and he was dotting the edge of a panel where the silver had flaked, one pinprick at a time, so the join would hold in the cold.

The last show ran to a half-empty house. Afterwards the trapeze girl, Ada, stood alone in the tunnel of glass and watched herself go off into the dark, a row of her after row, until she could no longer tell which one was her. Oddie came in with the lamp and found her there.

"Take the frames," he said. "Not the glass. The glass is only ever going to break."

She did. He packed them into his cart, three nested shapes wrapped in sacking, and drove north through the rain with the lamp swinging. Somewhere past Selby he stopped to check the load, and the lamp caught the small grey points of his own reflection in the black glass of the nearest frame.
