Blue wave on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A wave is tattooed on the forearm, with a curling crest and spray at the top and a long swept tail reaching towards the elbow. The linework is dark and defined, and the water is shaded in blue and teal with lighter highlights. The dark blue background and the bangles on the wrist sit around the arm, which is shown in the centre of the frame.

The winter the beck froze to the bottom, Old Ada Harrow kept the ice-hole open with a kettle and a stubborn heart. Every morning she carried the kettle down past the byre, broke the skin of the water at the sheep trough, and listened. Her neighbours said she was waiting for the thaw. She said she was waiting for the sea to come back up the valley, the way it used to when her grandmother was a girl.

On the twelfth morning the water answered. A low hush rose from the hole, then a long pull, like a rope drawn through a ring, and the ice on the trough cracked from its edge to its middle. Ada did not step back. She set the kettle down on the frost and watched a swell lift the surface, curl its crest over the rim, and throw a spray of cold salt into her face. The tail of it ran out past the stones and under the hedge towards the lane, dark and glassy, shot through with teal where the low sun caught it.
She followed it all day, boots soaked, past the gate, past the church, until the water thinned into the ditch at the bottom of Harrow's Lea and simply sat there, a wave with nowhere left to break. Ada knelt, scooped up a handful, and drank it. It tasted of pennies and kelp and the bottom of a well she had once been lowered into as a child.
She went home and lit the range. In the morning the trough was full of ordinary ice, and the beck ran brown and quiet under it. But the sheep were all facing east, and there was salt on the windowsill that did not melt.
