Blue feather tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Colour · Photo
A small feather is tattooed on the ankle, angled from top to bottom, with a dark central quill and fine barbs. The feather is filled with soft blue and violet shading that fades into the skin, giving a watercolour effect. The close crop centres the tattoo against the skin, with blue disposable covering and white fabric visible around the leg.

The first hard frost has turned the yard trough to a lid of grey glass, and you break it with the heel of your boot before filling the buckets. Your father always said the geese knew the weather before the wireless did. This morning they huddle by the barn door, sulking, and one has dropped a wing feather that lies on the frozen mud like a letter nobody came to collect.

You pick it up with two fingers. From the outside it is a plain grey-brown thing, longer than your hand, but when the low sun catches the barbs they turn blue at the tips and bruise to violet where they meet the quill, which runs down the middle dark as a pencil stroke. Your mother kept a jar of such feathers on the windowsill for years and never once told you where they came from.
By noon the sky has closed and snow comes sideways off the top field. You slip the feather into your coat pocket, mend the gate hinge with the wrench, and forget it until supper, when you find it caught in the lining, bent but whole. You lay it on the oilcloth beside the salt. Your mother studies it for a long time, then studies you, and says, "Put it in the jar, then. Somebody in this house has to keep count."
