Blue high-heel shoe on the ankle

Ankle · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of a high-heeled shoe sits on the ankle and top of the foot, shown in a shiny blue with pale highlights along the upper edge. The shading builds gradual tonal changes across the shoe's body and heel, with a faint reddish flush around the skin. The background shows blue fabric, and the framing is close and angled across the foot.

Dear Marian,

The shoe came in on Tuesday, handed across the counter at Halsey Junction in a paper bag already gone soft with rain. One blue court shoe, heel as thin as a pencil, the colour of a swimming pool at dusk. Nobody had come for its pair. The porter said it had been lying on the third platform bench since the last up train, neat as you like, toes pointed at the timetable board as if waiting to be called.

I logged it the way I log everything: item, location, date, and in the box marked remarks I wrote "no mate found." Then I put it on the high shelf above the umbrellas, where the things go that nobody wants.

Yesterday a woman came in asking after a parcel and stopped dead when she saw it up there. She didn't say whose it was. She only asked how long we'd had it, and when I said since Tuesday she nodded slowly and said that was about right, that she'd been walking home in one shoe and had decided not to mind. Then she bought a ticket for the 4:15 and left without her parcel.

I keep thinking about that. The shoe is still up there, and I find I'm pleased about it, which is not a sensible feeling for a lost-property clerk. The three months aren't up until March. Perhaps the other one will turn up by then, and I'll be able to send them both on together.

Yours in haste, Pat
