Blue gecko and plumeria flowers on a foot

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A blue gecko with orange feet climbs diagonally across the top of a foot, with its head turned towards the viewer. Pink and yellow plumeria flowers with green leaves sit above it, and soft shading gives the lizard and petals a rounded, three-dimensional look. The bright blue, orange, pink and yellow ink stands out against the skin, and the photo is taken close up.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gecko was already halfway up the wall of Tesi's yard when the first petal came loose and drifted down past the washing pegs. Nobody had asked it to climb. The plumeria tree at the corner had been dropping its blooms all week, pink at the rim and butter yellow at the throat, and the gecko, who kept the sun on the back step warm, had decided the stall on the harbour road needed them more than the goats did.

It carried them one at a time, gripping the pale render with its orange-toed feet and stopping whenever the wind pushed at its blue back. Each flower it laid on a broad green leaf, and each leaf it folded over like a parcel. By the third trip the old woman at the stall, Losa Pilo, had stopped sweeping and started counting. "Four," she said. "Five. You're a poor bookkeeper, lizard. You're charging yourself nothing."

The gecko ignored her and went for the sixth, the largest, which hung over the lip of the gutter where the rain had softened the wood. It reached, missed, and reached again. When the bloom finally came free it tumbled end over end, bounced once off the step, and came to rest in a puddle the colour of weak tea. The gecko looked down at it for a long time, its head tilted towards the stall as if waiting for permission.

Losa came out, wiped the flower on her apron, and tucked it behind the gecko's frill. Then she wrote on a card in careful capitals: ONE FLOWER, PAID IN FULL. The gecko could not read, so it climbed the nearest post and sat very still, pleased with its own sum.
