Blue-haired woman with rose on forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A woman with flowing blue and violet hair wears a red rose above her ear and has dotted, sugar skull style markings on her cheeks. Her hand rests near her chin, and grey-tan flowing shapes frame the figure against a dark background. Smooth shading and bright blue, purple and red ink give the portrait a strong, illustrative finish.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hush now, and mind the lamp, it smokes when the wind comes off the marsh. You want the tale of the Mercy May and the lady who rose at slack water, the one with salt dusted on her cheeks like the sugar the mourners carry over the bridge on the far bank.

She came up every November, hair spread out on the current like river weed, a red rose tucked above one ear that never wilted, not once in forty years. The bargefolk learned to keep their eyes on the tiller. She never spoke. She only lifted one pale hand to her chin, the way a woman does when she has a secret she is deciding whether to keep.

Young Tobias Fenn lost his brother to the sluice gates that winter and would not sleep for grief. He went down the bank with a lantern and a coil of rope, meaning to bring someone back, and found her waiting with the grey weed lifting round her like arms. She did not reach for him. She only waited, the way the tide waits, until he understood what she was asking. So he said his brother's name aloud, Caleb, loud enough to carry across the water, and the weed loosened its hold on the cap he had seen tangled there.

In the morning the rose was drifting on the brown water, turning slow circles as it went down towards the sea, and the cap was nowhere to be found. Tobias still keeps the lamp lit at the stern every November. Nobody has ever asked him why.
