Blue owl tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The left side shows a loose ink sketch of a stylised owl with large round eyes and feather-like tails on paper, and the right side shows the same design tattooed on the inner forearm. The tattoo uses soft, blended blue, teal and green washes with yellow and pink accents and bold black strokes at the tail, giving a painterly, watercolour look. The owl sits centrally on the forearm and fills most of the frame.

The owl has been perched on the balcony rail since the band struck up, its great round eyes following the couples as they turn beneath the paper lanterns. You have danced three numbers with Teodor Vance, who smells of brilliantine and harbour tar, and each time you come round the far end of the floor the bird is still there, a splash of teal and green against the faded gold of the ceiling, unblinking as a ship's lamp.

The painter who made it, Ada Quill, was a gap-toothed woman who lodged above the chandler's and paid her rent in portraits of the proprietor's dogs. She swore the owl was meant to guard the hall, that its trailing tails would sweep the floorboards clean of bad luck. Everyone in Saltmarsh says she painted it the summer before the boats stopped coming in, and that she never once climbed the stairs to the Pavilion after that. You thought it was only gossip, until Teodor leans close during the foxtrot and says the ferry leaves at midnight, and that he will be on it whether you come or not.
You tell him you need the last waltz to decide. He nods, returns you to the edge of the floor, and goes out through the side doors without looking back, and the owl's eyes swing after him like a lighthouse beam. The band plays the waltz slowly. You stay where you are, your shoes sticking a little to the spilt lemonade, and when the lanterns finally gutter out the only thing left shining is that painted stare.
Then the owl lifts from the rail in a soft rush of colour, its black-stroked tails dragging ink through the dark, and it sails out over the harbour wall. Far beyond the breakwater the ferry's lamp is already growing small, and the owl follows it out across the water, leaving behind a single curl of blue on the empty air.
