We make do with teabags in mugs that say World's Okayest Nurse, which Jas swears she didn't buy for herself.

The pot I mean is the one somebody left in the sluice room back in March, the blue one with peonies all over it, the same as the willow pattern on your Sunday plates but fatter, more like a cabbage with ambitions. Nobody has claimed it. It lives on the top shelf above the linen trolley, and at three in the morning it's the only thing in the building that looks like it's been looked after.

Last Tuesday a man in bay four asked for a cup of tea he couldn't drink. He didn't say a word about it, just lifted his hand towards the cup on his locker and let it fall back. I poured it anyway, let it stew the way you taught me, and sat with him while the steam went up past the reading lamp. He didn't drink it. He watched it instead, which I suppose is what tea is for at that hour.

When I went back to the sluice the pot was still warm from the kitchen. I put it back on the shelf with its spout turned to the window so the steam would have something to look at. Jas says that's daft. Come and see it in June, you'll like it. Love, Ellen.
