Teal awareness ribbon on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small awareness ribbon in teal, looped and curled so that its upper edge forms a heart-like outline. Black linework defines the ribbon and the curling tail, with soft teal shading inside the loops. The tattoo sits centrally on pale skin against a plain, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been standing in the dye-pits since before light, your forearms stained to the elbow with woad and weld, and the vat-master has told you twice that the wool will be ruined if you keep stirring it with cold hands. Outside the Londinium gate the river is the colour of pewter. Your mother's cousin Tertia, the only dyer on the Walbrook who still mixes her own alum, has left you a strip of undyed linen and an order scratched on a wax tablet: teal, not blue, the green of shallow water over chalk.

You work the strip through three baths, lifting it out to watch it drink the colour. The first bath is too dark and you curse. The second is too bright. By the third you have learned to wait for the moment the linen stops looking wet and starts looking like something a person might tie around a wrist. Tertia says the trick is patience with the lime. You do not believe her until you see the edge catch and lift.

When the strip is dry you fold it over on itself, loop after loop, pinching the upper curve so it sits like a heart someone drew in a hurry, and tie the tail with a single knot. Tertia unfolds it, runs her thumb along the crease, and says nothing for so long that you fear the colour has run. Then she laughs and tells you the vat-master owes her a jar of honey.

That night you find the ribbon pinned to the shelf, the knot still tight, and the river light going out of the window one thread at a time.
