Blue roses and dark leaves flash
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A flash drawing of three stylised roses in blue and teal, joined by a grey stem with thorns and several dark leaves with teal tips. Bold black outlines define the petals, and the blooms are shaded with lighter blue highlights and small yellow centres. The design sits centrally on a cream, stained parchment background, with partial shapes visible at the left edge.

You learn the blue roses on the harbour wall before you learn the names of the boats. Old Tamsin Rowe grows them in a tin bath beside the net loft, fed on fish guts and rainwater, and she says the teal on the leaf tips is the colour the sea turns an hour before a blow. You are fourteen and paid in strong tea to bail the bilge of the Mary Ellen on Sundays.

The fleet goes out at four. Your uncle Dal says the roses are bad luck to cut, so when the Ellen's skipper asks for a bloom to press into his logbook, you take the one with the thorn-scratched stem and tuck it inside your jumper. Tamsin sees and says nothing. She only leans on her broom and watches the grey line of hulls slip past the breakwater.
That night the wind backs north-east and the radio crackles that the Shetland boats are fine, but the Ellen is not answering. You stand at the wall with the stolen rose going soft and dark in your fist. Tamsin comes down in her coat over her nightdress, takes the bloom from you, and presses it back into the soil of the bath, stem first, the way you would bury a bird.
By morning the bath is crowded with buds. Nobody on the quay mentions the Ellen. Tamsin hands you a bucket and tells you the blue ones only open for people who come back to cut them, and you understand that the boat is coming in slowly, the way roses do, one petal at a time.
