Winter had settled on the Hollin farm so hard that the ewes stopped complaining. Old Maud Harrow kept the lamp lit in the barn because her grandson had promised to be home before the frost, and he hadn't come yet. She counted the hay bales twice each night, the way her mother had counted spoons.

On the ninth night a traveller came up the lane leading an elephant. It was not a real one, only a thing of painted wood with a trunk curled up like a question, its flanks stitched over with dots and rings and little diamonds of ochre and black. The traveller said it had walked out of the sea at Lowestoft and wanted only to be fed. Maud did not believe him, but the elephant ate the mash from her palm and left a trail of seeds across the flagstones.

Each morning the pattern on its head had changed. One day it was a circle of petals, the next a star, then a tangle of lines like the lane under snow. Maud understood that the creature was reading the farm and copying it back. So she walked it out past the gate where the boy had last stood, and let it lay its trunk on the drift.

When the thaw came, her grandson walked up the lane with a satchel and a limp. He found the elephant standing in the yard, and across its back, in tiny dots, his own name. Maud said nothing. She handed him the bucket, told him the beast was hungry, and said he was late.
