Striped abstract bear on the thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A bear standing side on, shown in profile with its head turned to the right, forms the whole subject of the tattoo. The body is filled with curved bands of black alternating with bright red, teal, orange, yellow and blue, with a few fine highlights, and the solid black outline gives it a bold, graphic edge. The design sits centrally on a hairy upper thigh, with shorts and a hand visible at the edges of the frame.

The stove had gone out twice before Ada admitted the bear was in the top field, and by then the frost had furred every gate post white. Her father had left the feed sacks open in the barn, the way he always did, and in the grey morning the torn paper lay across the floor like wrapping after a party nobody had been invited to.

She followed the prints through the stubble. They were big and splayed, and beside them ran a trail of coloured flecks where the light caught something in the snow: a smear of teal, a band of old gold, a red thread snagged on a hawthorn. Her uncle Tom swore the animal had wandered off a travelling fair in Shropshire years back, painted by some showman to frighten children, and had never found its way home.
She found it at the edge of the beck, standing side on with its head turned towards the water as if listening for something under the ice. Its coat was a patchwork of black bands and bright slivers, and where the sun broke low through the alders the colours seemed to slide over its shoulders like oil on a puddle. It did not run. It looked at her, then at the sacks in her arms, then back at the beck.
She left the sacks on the bank and walked home without looking round. At supper her father asked whether the barn door had been shut, and she said yes, which was true enough. Next morning there was a line of blue paw marks by the gate, neat as stitching, and the feed was gone, and nobody on the farm spoke of it again, except that the cows stopped lowing at night.
