Unicorn with feather and scrollwork on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A full-colour tattoo of a unicorn in profile, with a gold horn and gold scrollwork along its neck, a lilac flowing mane, and a red drape decorated with yellow flowers. A grey-green feather and a small green gem sit beside the lower body, and the lower leg shows a swirling lilac wisp. The design uses bold dark outlines and smooth, layered shading, and it fills most of the upper outer thigh against a plain background.

Peg the miller's daughter went up to Harrowgate Keep the week after the frost, because her brother had said the unicorn still lived in the chapel there, and nobody believed him. The keep had lost its roof to a lightning storm in her grandmother's time. Ivy grew through the windows, and the great hall smelled of wet stone and foxes.

She found the beast in the chapel, standing among the broken pews as if it had been waiting for the bell. Its horn was gilt, and the gilt had worn to bare brass where a hundred years of hands had touched it for luck. Its mane poured over one shoulder the colour of dusk on a lake. Across its back lay a red cloth stitched with yellow flowers, and caught in the cloth was a grey-green feather no bird in the county had ever worn.
"You are late," the unicorn said, not unkindly. "The lord who built this place promised me a bride for each winter. You are the first to come on foot."
Peg asked what the feather was for. The unicorn said it was the last thing the lord had given before he died, a token that the debt passed to whoever came next. Peg had no money, only a basket of bread and a sharp tongue. She offered the bread. The unicorn laughed, a sound like a bell rung underwater, and told her to take the feather instead and carry it to the sea.
She walked three days. At the cliff the feather lifted from her palm and turned into a gull, and the gull flew down to the water, where a green stone no bigger than a thumbnail lay in the shallows, waiting for the tide to give it back.
