Blue star on the forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A solid blue five-pointed star with a thin white inner outline and a dark navy-black outer edge sits on pale skin. The fill is flat and even, with a slightly speckled look in the white band. The star is centred on a close, slightly angled shot of the forearm against a plain light background.

Dear Nell, the cook has run out of lamp oil again, so I am writing this by the galley stove with the door propped open to the swell. We passed the Azores on Tuesday in a fog so thick the bosun swore he could smell the bottom of the sea. Captain Harrow has taken to standing at the taffrail each dusk, counting the stars against his chart as if one of them might have moved while nobody was looking.

The star I promised you is painted on the lid of the biscuit tin under my bunk. Mr Pell, who had the paint from the Bristol yard, gave me the blue and a scrap of white canvas for the edge. He said a navigator's mark wants a dark keel line round it or it drifts off the page. I went over the outline four times with a sable brush while the ship rolled, and by the fourth the white band had a speckle in it, like frost on a fence rail. I am not sure it will last the trip home.

Yesterday the second mate made the lads swab the hold, and they found an old chart box wedged behind the pump. Inside was a star of brass with the same five points, polished almost to nothing. Nobody aboard could say whose it was. Pell thinks the ship carried it from a sailmaker's shop in Liverpool, and every man has had a guess at its owner. I put it in my pocket, and it has been warm there ever since.

I will bring the brass home when we dock at Avonmouth. You can tell Mother I have not lost my compass, only swapped it for a better one. Leave the lamp burning in the front window facing the road. If the fog holds, I shall steer for the light and trust the star to show me where the shore lies. Your loving brother, Tom.
