Pink starfish tattoo on ankle

Dear Nell, the big top came down in Carlisle on Tuesday. A sheet of canvas caught the wind wrong and folded itself around the ringmaster, and he swore at it as if it had insulted his mother. Mum says we'll be on the coast road by Friday regardless. Don't tell Dad I said so. He still thinks the Harcourt Brothers will come back for the elephants.

The starfish is still with us. Mr Pell kept it in the glass tank that used to hold the water snake, pink as a boiled prawn, five arms, speckled all over as though someone had flicked a paintbrush at it. The children paid a penny to watch it at the sideshow, and nobody ever bought the pamphlet about it that Mr Pell wrote himself. When the tank cracked outside Ferrybridge we lost most of the water. I thought it would die, but it only curled its arms in and sat in the wet straw, waiting for the rest of us to work out what we were doing.

Yesterday I carried it down to the estuary at Morecambe in a bucket, the way you'd carry a cake to a christening. I didn't tell anyone. It slid off my palm onto the sand and set off at its slow, ridiculous pace towards the water, one arm leading, as if it had a map folded somewhere in its middle. I stood there until the tide came over my boots and I couldn't feel my toes.

Write back and tell me you're still walking out with the boy from the lion cage, and that the nightly parade has stopped looking like a funeral. Love, Bea.
