Small star on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single five-pointed star sits on the inner wrist of a pale arm and hand. It is drawn in thin black linework, with inner lines that divide each point into stripes. The design is in black ink only and is set small and centred against a plain grey background.

Mind the third board from the stage, it lifts when the bass drum is struck, and nobody at the Starlight Rooms has ever bothered to nail it down. The dancers say it keeps better time than the band. Your grandmother's mother danced here every Saturday in the year the pier burned, and she always kept a small brass star pinned inside her cuff, which is the first thing you need to know about the night of the fog.

The star had been cast by Tobias Renwick, the lamp man, who made it for his daughter to wear. Five points, each one cut with fine grooves so that when a lamp shone through it, the light fell across the floor in striped bars, like the ribs of a fan. Dancers called them the cuts. A man who wanted to ask a girl for the last waltz would leave one of these stars on her table, and she would know by the stripes whether he meant it.
On the last night of that August, the sea fog came in so thick the lamps were only yellow smears. Ivy Marsh, who clerked at the telegraph office and could not dance to save herself, had the star in her palm when the power failed. She held it up to the one lamp still burning by the door, and the stripes fell across the boards in a pattern she could follow, bar by bar, out to the promenade and home.
She never learned who left the star on her table that year. She kept it anyway, and the next morning there were fine lines pressed red into the skin of her inner wrist where she had gripped it, as if the light had marked her for the way back. Mind the third board going out. It still lifts for anyone who listens.
